Visioning the Land

Artist in Residence
On the peat bogs of  County Tyrone, Northen Irland

Lowry's Diary - Day 8

29.04.2021

County Tyrone, Northern Ireland

Today I install something a little bit different.

The peatlands is surrounded by 3 small country schools, one Irish speaking primary school, and 2 other small primary schools, one of which is St. John’s where I had the privilege during my time as artist in residence to go and work with the children. In tribute to these great little people I have created some art installations for the trail aimed at children.

I’m passionate about art education and for the last 5 years I have been Chief Examiner for the Contemporary Craft Design GCSE for the Northern Ireland Curriculum Council. I believe art can help children access the big issues.

These works on the trail are fun. I want them to be enjoyed by children.

I’ve already today had a young boy passing through the bog on a quad bike on his way from school, he asked if he can take a Blue Eyed Grass stem from the installation, I said yes – he said he thought it was a plant.

The local schools will be taking nature walks around the trail this week so I’m hoping the children enjoy the work and look at the bogland in a different way – not just miles of bog anymore but an exciting, living, cultural, beautiful place.
