Visioning the Land
Artist in Residence
On the peat bogs of County Tyrone, Northen Irland
Lowry's Diary - Day 11
County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
My final day installing.
The art trail has really taken shape and visitors and passers-by have been very kind and very interested. I have enjoyed designing the trail as an experience for people to interact with. And it has been busy since I started installing because we have had such great weather.
In 2019 I was Artist in Residence for the Alaska State Government, living in a remote log cabin in the woods. Just me and the bears! Each day I went out to install my work, armed with a portable radio playing loud music and a can of bear spray! I did see bears, but thankfully they were at a distance.
The peat bogs of County Tyrone have been less stressful, but equally as beautiful as Alaska.
Today I install the final piece of the jigsaw, the White Beak Sedge piece. Based on a tiny little plant with white flowers that look like beaks. There’s a lovely, soggy, wet mud bath area that I have decided is perfect for this piece. I just have to be very careful not to lose a Wellington boot in the process, but the white against the black peaty soil really works.
This one is an easy install, just pushing the little shapes into the soft soil.
I will now take a walk around the trail and adjust anything that needs it.
2 miles long and I have walked it so many times but this time I will do it very slowly.
It’s been a pleasure to connect with the people who have been reading my diary and I would like to thank you all. Also thanks to everyone who has commented and connected with this process on Instagram, it has been much appreciated.
Lastly a massive thank you to Devamitra and particularly to the amazing, talented, kind, creative soul that is Devi (Deviprasad C Rao)!!!
He has helped me develop this project in a way I hadn’t dreamt of.
It has been a privilege to work with him, and Devamitra, and I wish them all the very best for the future. Thank You!
