Jens Thiele was born in Potsdam in 1944. He studied free graphics with Malte Sartorius at the Braunschweig Art Academy and studied art history in Göttingen. Between 1970 to 1974 he worked as an art teacher in Göttingen.
In 1974 he completed his PhD thesis in art history ("The work of art in film"). From 1974-1979 he worked as research assistant at the art education seminar at the University of Wuppertal. From 1980 he worked as professor for visual media at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg.
Since 1997 till 2008 he was director of the research center for children's and youth literature at the University of Oldenburg. His focus in teaching and research was mainly - theory, history and aesthetics of visual media with special focus on children's book illustration, feature film and media history. He also published on the theory and aesthetics of picture books and the media. He was member of national and international juries for children's and youth literature since 1982. He also wrote as reviewer for ZEIT and SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG.
Since 2009 he re-invented himself as an artist, primarily creating collage art and works in his studio in Münster. Since 2011 till today he participated in several solo and group exhibitions and his works are in private and public collections in many countries.
